Green plant or moss wall care
If you want to beautify your office, shop, café or trade fair booth with an indoor green wall or a moss logo, you don't have to have a green thumb. Sygns moss & plant products offer a low-maintenance solution.
How to care for a green moss or plant wall
Low-maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance, a green wall might still require a minimum amount of care – just like any household or office item. Some light dusting every now and then is definitely recommended! Additionally, our moss & plant products last longest if they are kept in ideal conditions, which we will go into deeper at a later point.
To be clear, there are different types of green walls that require different kinds of care and maintenance. Sygns offers only preserved products, which are real plants that have been chemically treated so as not to spoil over time. But let’s go over the other types quickly as well anyways!
Artificial green wall care
Artificial plants are made from plastics or some other kind of synthetic material, such as polyester. As such, of course they don’t grow or need water and nutrients, like live plants would. Another clear advantage of artificial green walls is their longevity. But on the other hand, the production and disposal of plastic materials has a known negative effect on the environment, so fake green walls are not eco-friendly at all.
Contrary to popular belief, ordinary commercially available artificial plants are not toxic for people or animals (as far as we’ve been able to find out), but if you opt for fake plants, you should be aware of their components and how to properly dispose of them.
Artificial plants walls should be dusted and cleaned regularly, otherwise they will look dull pretty quickly. They should be kept out of sunlight so as not to lose their colour and become brittle, as direct sun will bleach the plastic leaves.
Live green wall maintenance
Live green walls made of living plants are beautiful, but they are very high maintenance. Actual living plants need constant care: pruning or trimming, watering, fertilisation, and regular repotting or soil exchange are some of the main factors of live green wall maintenance.
Additionally, some plants are very prone to plant diseases and various kinds of parasites, such as flies, lice or mosquitos. All this means that aside from already comparatively high acquisition costs – for larger green walls, it’s advisable to install some sort of watering system, for example – live moss or plant walls bring a high level of maintenance costs and effort as well.
Another downside can be allergies, so if you’re planning to acquire a living plant wall, make sure that none of your coworkers are allergic to any of the components!
All in all, if you don’t have a green thumb and struggle to keep a cactus alive in your home, no offense, but it might be best to keep your hands off living plant walls.
Preserved green wall care
Now we’re getting to the goods! Of course we’re biased, but there are a few advantages to preserved plant and moss products: They are very durable if kept in good conditions, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. Below, as promised some more detailed info on how to best care for your beloved Sygns moss logo, moss wall art, plant wall, or Moss+ product.
Ideal humidity for preserved green walls
Sygns green walls have been specially preserved in a process where water is removed from the plants and moss. This effectively freezes them in this state. Consequently, no water (or any other liquid, for that matter), should be re-added to the preserved plants. This means that environments with high moisture or humidity levels may be detrimental to the green wall.
Humidity levels in the room or rooms where your green products are installed should ideally be maintained between 35% and 65%. This corresponds to regular recommended humidity levels for rooms in general, which is around 50% – meaning under ordinary conditions, your moss and plant products will be completely fine and won’t need any special treatment.
For preserved jungle plants or jungle moss, the humidity level should not exceed 65%, while a drop below 35% is not harmful to the product.
In general, when the humidity level is too low and the moss starts looking dried-out, it’s safe to use an air humidifier for the room. Please do not spray or mist water directly on the plants. Preserved reindeer moss for example can dry out and become brittle at low humidity, but when treated with an air humidifier will soften up again.
Effects of direct UV light on green walls
Direct sunlight can over time make the beautiful green colours fade, so it is best to place the green wall in a position that avoids long periods of direct light. This applies to artificial UV light as well.
Once the moss or plants are sunburned, discoloured, or faded from too much direct light, it’s unfortunately not possible to remedy this and restore them to their original state. So planning ahead before installing your green wall is advisable!
